HBO is pushing the envelope yet again — this time with its DVD repackaging.
Having gotten lucky with big pricetags on miniseries such as “Band of Brothers” and “From the Earth to the Moon,” HBO Video has created a massive and expensive 20-disc collector’s box set of “Sex and the City: The Complete Series.”
Cost: a whopping $299.95.
Set will be available on Nov. 1; it is the first complete series collection released by HBO, but it will certainly not be the last, and may not even be the last configuration for “Sex and the City.”
The network will consider other variations such as thematic or star’s favorite episodes in the coming years.
In addition to all 94 episodes from all six seasons of the series and all the extras that were included on the individual season sets such as the three alternate endings to the final episode, HBO had produced another disc of all new bonus features such as guides to fashion, New York restaurants, dating advice, a quote trivia game and highlights of high-profile guest appearances.
The first three seasons of “Sex and the City” rank among the top five most successful HBO series on DVD, a chart that is topped by “Band of Brothers’ and also includes the first season of “The Sopranos.”
It is not inconceivable that 20% of consumers who have already purchased one or more seasons sets will buy this collection either for themselves or as a gift for the holidays.
The set is packaged as an elaborate rose-colored “ultra-suede”/velvet photo album designed as a coffee table collectible.
But HBO isn’t just counting on existing fans. Sales of the first two season sets spiked as TBS Superstation began running reruns, and HBO expects another lift as the show enters its second phase of syndication in September on Tribune-owned stations.
Only half of the current customers of the seven season sets (the sixth season was sold in two separate sets) are HBO subscribers.
