Sony mans ‘Neanderthals’

Favreau to pen, produce CG pic for SPA

Jon Favreau has set up his original story “Neanderthals” at Sony Pictures Animation.

Details of the pic are being kept under wraps, but the “Elf” director will write and produce the feature-length CG pic.

“Neanderthals” is the second SPA project for Favreau, who voices the character of Reilly, the construction foreman of a group of dam-building beavers, in “Open Season,” SPA’s first animated feature, due out in fall 2006.

Favreau also is directing Columbia Pictures’ “Zathura,” based on the children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg.

SPA is in production on “Surf’s Up!,” a mockumentary about surfing penguins due out in summer 2007.

SPA is headed by exec VPs Penney Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins.
