Hefty donation secured rights to music company

EMI and Live 8 have concluded a unique agreement whereby EMI has secured the worldwide DVD rights to Saturday’s Live 8 concerts in the U.K., U.S., Canada, France, Germany and Italy.

EMI expects to release locally tailored DVDs around the world in November. Live 8 assigned the rights to EMI after the music company pledged a hefty donation to the org.

The concerts are being held ahead of the G8 summit in Scotland on July 6, where eight world leaders will be presented with a plan to increase aid, drop debt and make trade laws fair in an attempt to stop 30,000 children dying of extreme poverty every day.

“Music can galvanize people into taking positive action like nothing else,” said David Munns, chairman and CEO, EMI Music North America. “We believe the DVD will capture the spirit and magic of what we believe will be some extraordinary performances and ensure that the message behind Live 8 will carry on and continue to resonate beyond July.”

Artists performing at the concerts include Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Sheryl Crow, Dido, Green Day, Jay-Z, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Linkin Park, Madonna, Maroon 5, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Sting, Joss Stone, U2, Keith Urban, Velvet Revolver, Robbie Williams, Brian Wilson and Stevie Wonder.
