Theater co. brings its big screens to Latin America

TORONTO — Large-screen theater company Imax has inked a deal with Latin American media and entertainment companies Circuito Alba and Repretel to bring the first Imax systems to Guatemala and Costa Rica.

“Latin America is a relatively untapped market where we have the opportunity to expand into many other countries across the region, and these deals underscore that potential,” said Imax co-chairmen and co-CEOs Rich Gelfond and Brad Wechsler.

The systems will be located in Guatemala City and San Jose. Imax already has theaters in Ecuador and Mexico, and a deal was signed in 2003 to open an Imax theater in Chile.

The Guatemala City theater, part of a nine-screen multiplex, is expected to be open by the end of the year. The San Jose theater, whose location has yet to be announced, is skedded to open in 2006.
