Remote control purchasing introduced
HOLLYWOOD — HSN has signed a deal with interactive TV producer Goldpocket Interactive to let viewers purchase products on-screen with the click of a remote.Shopping net, part of Barry Diller’s InterActive Corp., will let users with iTV-ready digital cable and satellite set-top boxes purchase items displayed on-air by pushing a few buttons. iTV backers consider home shopping a natural application of the technology and HSN competitor QVC signed a similar deal with OpenTV last year. But though it has considered such technologies for a few years, HSN only recently decided to enter the market. “I’ve spent a good five years looking at interactive applications, but they’ve never been where they needed to be,” said HSN finance VP John McDevitt. “We’ve just come to a time now where the distribution is there and the technology has matured far enough.”
