'Desperate Housewives' and 'SmashBrain' among winners at Mipcom

CANNES — The winners of Mipcom’s inaugural Mobile TV Awards were honored Wednesday evening in Cannes and included American entrees like Disney’s “Desperate Housewives” recaps and CinemaElectric’s “SmashBrain.” The winners were selected by an international jury from a total of 23 nominated projects.

The Mobile TV Screenings & Awards were key components of the Mobile TV Day at Mipcom Wednesday, which focused on the creation of mobile entertainment concepts and formats.

Sponsored by mobile operator Orange and European broadcaster Arte, the Mobile TV Screenings & Awards were launched in August 2005 and attracted 235 entries from 30 countries and 135 companies. The Mobile TV Awards were created and co-produced with Mediaplay, a U.K.-based mobile content consultancy.

Mark Selby, president of the jury, said: “We had participants ranging from big broadcasters to small mobile content companies. It was confirmed once more that good content travels across platforms, but innovation in this medium can come from anyone.”

The awards ceremony was emceed by British TV presenter Ray Cokes.

In addition to the jury awards, there was a special “Best of Show” prize, which was voted by the audience, and the Grand Prize for Best Innovation in Mobile Content awarded by Orange.
