Internet giant Yahoo! has tapped former CBS exec David Katz as head of its sports and entertainment divisions.
Katz will be based in Santa Monica and will report to Yahoo! Media Group topper Lloyd Braun. He will oversee Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Entertainment and Yahoo TV.
“The media landscape is undergoing fundamental change, with consumers and advertisers demanding more compelling interactive experiences,” Katz said. “Yahoo! is uniquely positioned to develop the next generation of content.”
Katz’s departure from the Eye comes three months after CBS Marketwatch founder Larry Kramer was hired to run CBS’ newly formed digital media unit.
He comes to Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo! after eight years at the Eye, where he was responsible for strategic planning and interactive ventures. He was in charge of the CBS.com Web site, the most popular of the broadcast nets’ Web sites.
He also led the effort to put live streams of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on the Web in 2003 and managed the creation and development of the first daily online yakkers from a network: “House Calls: The Big Brother Talk Show” and “Survivor Live.”
In addition, he developed the first network-based online video subscription service, “Big Brother 24/7.” He was nominated for an Emmy for his interactive television production work on “Survivor” and “CSI.”
Before joining CBS, Katz was a management consultant for McKinsey & Co., specializing in strategy and new-media issues.
Katz serves on the boards of National Assn. of Television Program Executives and USC’s Center for the Digital Future.
