‘Mama’ scribe in toon prod’n

Cuaron, Castillo have been developing idea for two years

MEXICO CITY– Mexican writer Carlos Cuaron, brother of helmer Alfonso Cuaron and co-writer of “Y tu mama tambien,” is launching an animation production company.

While legal details are yet to be locked down, Cuaron said he and Mexican animator Rene Castillo have been developing the idea for nearly two years.

“The creative side is very advanced,” Cuaron said, adding that he will continue to write live-action scripts.

Castillo, whom Cuaron called a “cartoon freak” and the “best animator in Mexico,” has won a host of awards for two clay-animation shorts, “No Support” (Sin sosten) and “Down to the Bone” (Hasta los huesos).

The first film project could be a children’s play that Cuaron wrote some years ago.

The idea of the company, yet to be named, came up when the two started exploring the idea of producing that play as a film.

“For me, it is a creative challenge in the sense of the scripts,” Cuaron said. “All these cartoons are pure madness. So you have to tune into that channel.”
