The Specials

"They're not incredible. They're just special!" So goes Anchor Bay Entertainment's tongue-in-cheek pitch for its super hero comedy, which arrives on disc this week, nearly a month before Pixar's popular toon hits shelves.

“They’re not incredible. They’re just special!” So goes Anchor Bay Entertainment’s tongue-in-cheek pitch for its super hero comedy, which arrives on disc this week, nearly a month before Pixar’s popular toon hits shelves.

A limited release in 2000, the comedy stars Rob Lowe, Paget Brewster and Thomas Haden Church as second-rate superheroes who try to boost their group image, only to have their foibles get in the way.

Anchor Bay illustrates the superheroes’ also-ran status in the emergency kit sent to media: The Specials are listed seventh on the emergency phone list, way below the Annihilators and even the Super Justice League of America.

The kit also contains a red eye mask, ID badges and a few bandages for those specials viewers who try the stunts at home.
