Palm slates more ‘Directors’ discs

Glazer, Romanek to be included in series

NEW YORK –After launching DVD series “The Directors Label” –featuring collected odds and ends by hip helmers Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Chris Cunningham — Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures will bow further installments in the DVD series.

These editions are devoted to Jonathan Glazer (“Sexy Beast”), Mark Romanek (“One Hour Photo”) and musicvid helmers Anton Corbijn and Stephane Sednaoui.

DVDs will be released individually Sept. 13, with a boxed set encompassing the four titles released concurrently.

Series producer Richard Brown selected the new batch of directors along with Gondry, Jonze and Cunningham.

The DVDs in the series compile musicvideos, shorts, commercials and special features including interviews, unseen short films, behind-the-scenes footage and commentaries.

The producers of the second series created a royalty pool with all the artists and license holders taking an equal cut.

First series saw the Gondry and Cunningham discs go gold and the Jones DVD platinum in the U.S. and various foreign territories.

“The DVD medium has become clearly more successful,” Gondry told Daily Variety. “It really has helped me tremendously to get recognition and to launch ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’ ”

Directors potentially being lined up for a third installment of the series include Mike Mills (“Thumbsucker”) and Garth Jennings of directing duo Hammer & Tongs (“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”).

“When I started Palm, it was formed as a DVD company,” said Blackwell. “What I thought DVD can do is give you a blank canvas for a new type of art form. I think this series is exhibit A showing what DVD can really do.”
