Gov’t shuts down foreign sat porn

World Brief

The Australian Broadcasting Authority has shut down porn services that were being beamed into Australia via satellite from Luxembourg and Vanuatu.

The FreeXTV and Backroom feeds provided by Luxembourg-based Canal Europe Audiovisual and Sexz.TV from Vanuatu-registered Magnetic Enterprises breached the license for narrowcasting TV services by broadcasting X-rated material.

The Broadcasting Act enables the ABA to enforce its licensing provisions against foreign persons who broadcast from outside the country.

Sam Chisholm has stepped down as chairman of Foxtel, Australia’s dominant paybox, but will remain on the board as a rep of Kerry Packer’s Pub-lishing & Broadcasting Ltd., which is partnered in Foxtel with News Corp. and telco Telstra.

Move had been expected since Chisholm became a director of PBL and resigned from Telstra’s board last October.

Chisholm, who had been chairman since 2001, replaces PBL exec chairman James Packer as a PBL-nominated Foxtel director. He’s been replaced as chairman by Telstra exec Bruce Akhurst.
