Digital TV is in 60% of Brit homes

250,000 households connecting per month

LONDON — Digital TV is in more than 60% of British homes and almost 30% of households have broadband, more than have dial-up, according to U.K. communications regulator Ofcom.

The increase, attributed to falling prices and increased connection speeds, looks likely to spark a revolution in TV viewing.

“The combination of mass-market appeal, rapid growth, falling prices, increasing connection speeds and innovation in video technology means that by 2010, the number of households able to view television over broadband is likely to exceed the number of households dependent on analog terrestrial broadcasts for all their television viewing,” the regulator predicted in its annual report.

The march of digital TV, with around 250,000 households being connected a month, is driven by digital terrestrial service Freeview; it was responsible for 70% of growth last year.

More than 4.5 million U.K. households now receive digital TV via Freeview boxes, which has eroded satcaster BSkyB’s dominance of the market.
