Claims b'caster pressured employees not to join union

TORONTO — The Canadian Media Guild on Monday reported Alliance Atlantis Communications’ broadcasting division to the Industrial Relations Board for trying to pressure employees not to join the union.

In July, the Canadian Media Guild applied to represent about 100 Toronto-based technical employees at the broadcaster, which is not unionized. Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting, a division of Alliance Atlantis Communications, operates 17 specialty channels, including BBC Canada, Showcase and HGTV.

“Alliance Atlantis may be one of the most successful broadcasters in Canada,” said CMG campaign worker Scott Edmonds, “but that doesn’t mean its success is automatically shared with its employees.”

The Canadian Media Guild represents employees at TVOntario, Reuters, Vision TV, Toronto 1 and the CBC. CBC’s 5,500 CMG members are locked in a labor dispute with the pubcaster.
