If there’s a clear loser from the 2005 awards season, it has to be the Century Plaza Hotel.
The venue had long been the preferred hosting site for guild kudos events. But it lost four awards shows this year — the Producers Guild, DGA, WGA West and the American Society of Cinematographers — due to a boycott of nine luxury hotels by Unite Here Local 11.
Rough estimates place the revenue loss at as much as $100,000 per event.
With the union and the hotels unlikely to come to an agreement any time soon, the guilds already are expecting to hold their fetes elsewhere in 2006.
The Los Angeles hotel workers have been without a contract since July. They want better wages plus a deal that would expire in 2006, the same time as contracts with hotels in nine other major cities; the hotels oppose a joint termination date.
