Johnson filling vacancy created by Aguirre's resignation
MIAMI — Michael O. Johnson, CEO of nutritional supplement and personal care products company Herbalife, has been elected to the board of directors of Spanish-language media conglom Univision Communications.
Univision said Johnson will fill a vacancy created by the Feb. 18 resignation of Fernando Aguirre, who held one of the independent seats.
Aguirre joined the Univision board in September 2003, when he was with Procter & Gamble. In January 2004 he became CEO of Chiquita Brands Intl.
In its February SEC filing, Univision cited increased demands on Aguirre’s time by Chiquita. However, Aguirre’s resignation also closely followed the promotion of Univision Television networks prexy Ray Rodriguez to the corporate post of prexy-chief operating officer.
That appointment set off a furor and led to the resignation of Televisa chairman-CEO Emilio Azcarraga from his position as vice chair, as well as that of his top deputy, Alfonso de Angoitia, as an alternate director.
The other Univision board members are company execs Jerry Perenchio and Ray Rodriguez; former Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. topper Mac Tichenor Jr., who briefly served as an executive after HBC was acquired by Univision; John Perenchio and Anthony Cassara, both of whom are execs at Jerry Perenchio’s investment firm Chartwell Partners; Harold Gaba; prexy-CEO of ACT III Communications Holdings; Warner Bros. prexy-COO Alan Horn; and shareholder Gustavo Cisneros, the chairman-CEO of media and industrial conglom the Cisneros Group of Companies.
Alejandro Rivera, managing director and VP of Venevision Intl. Corp., a subsidiary of the Cisneros Group, is the alternate.
