Canuck raids target pirates

Authorities nab largest cache ever seized in Canada

TORONTO — Raids at three Toronto-area malls over the weekend led to 20 arrests and the seizure of 200,000 pirated DVDs worth C$4 million ($3.4 million) — the largest cache ever seized in Canada.

The raids were jointly conducted by local police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Customs and motion picture officials.

Seized counterfeit titles included current theatricals “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” “The Legend of Zorro,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Chicken Little” and “Jarhead.”

Canada has become a hotbed of DVD pirating, said Doug Frith, prexy of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Assn., because local piracy laws are more lax in the Great White North, as is the manner in which they are enforced.
