Re: Columbia Embarks on “Voyage” (Daily Variety, March 9)
As your story seemingly noted every previous cinematic Sinbad to precede Keanu’s newest voyage — listing literally everyone who played the sailor, from Sebastian Cabot and Lou Ferrigno to Shemp Howard — you forgot to mention the one significant personality most of us will never forget in the role: Bluto.
Max Fleischer’s “Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor” (Paramount, 1936) was not only nominated for an Academy Award for cartoon short, it was recently inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. It’s also one of the greatest animated films ever made.
