Premiere, ATVplus score soccer rights

World Brief

Teuton pay TV platform Premiere and Austrian terrestrial channel ATVplus have snatched the broadcasting rights for Austria’s two prime soccer leagues from Austrian pubcaster ORF.

The partners have paid E42 million ($50 million) for three seasons until 2007, with live games handled by Premiere and news by ATVplus, Austria’s only commercial channel.

“Together with ATVplus, Premiere for the first time succeeded in breaking ORF’s traditional monopoly,” Premiere topper Georg Kofler said, adding that “this is the big bang for the development of commercial TV in Austria.”
