Cabler to re-version Brit hidden-camera hit
LONDON — U.K. production outfit Tiger Aspect has inked a U.S. format deal with MTV for its award-winning comedy series “My New Best Friend.”
Recently honored with a TV kudo at the British Comedy Awards, the U.S. version of “My New Best Friend” will be co-produced by Tiger Aspect and Ashton Kutcher’s production company, Katalyst.
Pilot will be overseen by Tiger Aspect’s head of comedy and entertainment, Clive Tulloh, who will travel to Hollywood to work on the project later this month.
Since debuting in Blighty on Channel 4 last summer, the hidden-camera show has won a loyal following among young auds.
Written by and starring Marc Wootton, “My New Best Friend” features six competitors each trying to pass off a complete stranger as their new best friend for an entire weekend. But the so-called friend is an undercover actor determined to cause as much mayhem as possible and to be revealed as a fake.
“The U.S. has been a key territory for us over the last 12 months,” Tulloh said. “We are delighted to have won this new format deal. The British Comedy Award win for ‘My New Best Friend’ proves its popularity in the U.K., and we are confident that it will be a hit with the U.S. audience.”
