JOHANNESBURG — E.tv, South Africa’s only privately owned commercial terrestrial TV channel, is planning to challenge pubcaster SABC1’s top-rated sudser, “Generations,” by skedding a new sudser head-to-head in the 8 p.m. slot.
E.tv’s upstart “Scandals” will bow in the new year, but the web is tightlipped about details, besides indicating that it will be homegrown and “very realistically South African.”
“Generations,” set in the upwardly mobile world of the black advertising industry, has seldom been knocked off its perch as the country’s top show since its inception in 1994.
Viewership is at a steady Audience Rating of 18, with its closest rival, U.S. soap “The Bold and the Beautiful” at 6 p.m., at 16 ARs.
No other local soap has even come close to those viewership levels.
