Fox’s Wednesday rock solid

Fox scored an impressive victory in key young-adult categories Wednesday night, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, receiving strong perfs from “American Idol,” “That ’70s Show” and “The OC.”

The 30-minute results show episode of “American Idol” at 8:30 dominated its slot (8.8/23 in adults 18-49, 20.2 million viewers overall), while lead-out drama “The OC,” featuring guest star Paris Hilton, won the 9 o’clock hour in key demos with some of its best scores to date (5.3/13 in adults 18-49, 11.3 million viewers overall).

In the night’s opening hour, “That ’70s Show” (5.8/16 in adults 18-49, 11.7 million viewers overall) was a strong No. 2 in 18-49 to the first half-hour of a special “Survivor” recap show on CBS (6.3/18). For its hour, “Survivor” averaged a 6.2/17 in adults 18-49 and 16.5 million viewers overall.

Elsewhere on the night, NBC’s original “Law & Order” (5.2/15 in adults 18-49, 15.1 million viewers overall) won the 10 o’clock drama battle over CBS’ special repeat of “CSI” (3.6/10 in adults 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) and ABC’s quickly fading “Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital” (2.3/6 in adults 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall).

In its second week, CBS 9:30 comedy “The Stones” (3.5/9 in adults 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) retained just 70% of its strong lead-in from “King of Queens” (5.0/12 in adults 18-49, 12.9 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 6.3/16; CBS, 4.7/13; NBC, 3.6/9; ABC, 3.2/8; WB, 1.1/3; UPN, 0.7/2.

In total viewers: Fox, 13.6 million; CBS, 12.5 million; NBC, 10.2 million; ABC, 8.0 million; WB, 2.7 million; UPN, 2.0 million.
