WAILEA, MAUI — Woody Harrelson couldn’t resist a political jab at the Maui Film Fest. At the June 16-20 fest with his “Go Further” docu — which extols hemp as a fuel source — and to pick up an award for activism, he sounded off against the war in Iraq.
“The best tribute we could give to the soldiers who’ve died in Iraq would be to get the hell off the dinosaur teat,” he declared.
A drunk who heckled fellow honoree Bill Maher was swiftly removed by fest director Barry Rivers, prompting the comic to quip, “You run a tight ship, brother, let me tell you. I’d like to see you run the Oscars.”
Fest soirees included a June 19 party at the oceanfront home of music manager and restaurateur Shep Gordon and a swank VIP reception June 17 at the Four Seasons’ Spago. Fest honoree Angela Bassett and indie moguls Ted Hope and Cassian Elwes were among those hobnobbing on the island.
