Travelling ‘Pants’

Comedy addresses sexuality, stirs crowd

Steve Martin’s latest adaptation, “The Underpants,” opened at the Geffen Playhouse on March 17 with most attendees raving about how short the play was and how they loved not having an intermission.

The play “was Steve’s response to Monica Lewinsky,” castmember Dan Castellaneta said at the opening night after-party. “As long as people are hung up with sexuality and fame, it’s the right time for this,” he added.

Blake Edwards, who knows a thing or two about slapstick comedies, said, “I want to enjoy thinking about it for a while.”

Among those enjoying the comedy were Geffen director Gil Cates, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Julie Andrews, David Geffen, Ed Limato, Michelle Pfeiffer with David E. Kelley, Eric Idle, Eddie Izzard, Anne Hathaway, Doris Roberts and Diahann Carroll.
