Streep acts political

Dramatists fete thesp with lifetime achievement kudos

NEW YORK — Will Meryl Streep play the first lady?

The New Dramatists honored the actress with its lifetime achievement award May 27 at the Marriott Marquis.

Tony Kushner told the aud he loved Streep because she once told a reporter that for certain roles it’s “most important to have great hair.” She endeared him further when she revealed that watching tapes of Karen Hughes and Peggy Noonan was her research for the role of the politically diabolical mother in “The Manchurian Candidate” remake.

Accepting the award, Streep thanked Kushner for all his plays. “And for the Laura Bush playlet you sent me!” she added with great devilment.
