Porn past spices up yuk spot

Factory's Gotham locale has steamy secrets

NEW YORK — The May 12 opening night bash for the new Gotham branch of Laugh Factory could not shake the legacy of the building’s former tenant: Show World, the notorious Times Square-district porn house — especially since the new complex is a maze of back rooms, hallways and mirrors with low-lit red-and-black decor.

“To watch comics here, you have to go in a booth, put a quarter in, and a shade goes up for about a minute,” cracked Gilbert Gottfried. “If you want to see the rest of the joke you gotta put another quarter in.”

Laugh Factory topper Jamie Masada brushed off all porn talk: “You can’t ask what the building was about, what’s bad about it; that’s not the important thing,” he said. “You go anywhere you can find a good location.”

The clash between past and present trickled into the night’s standup slate, a mix of young black comics (like Dean Edwards and Godfrey) and old blue comics (like Tom Dreesen and Jackie Martling).
