‘Phantom’ finally unmasks

Musical bows in Leicester Square after 15-year journey

LONDON — The strange 15-year trip of “Phantom of the Opera” from a planned Joel Schumacher film adaptation to a decade-plus of development hell and back again with Schumacher at the helm, was completed Dec. 6 when the screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s London stage blockbuster musical bowed in Leicester Square.

On hand were Lloyd Webber and family, Schumacher, film stars Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson, Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson.
