Spanish-lingo pic unspools at festive fete
HBO Films/Fine Line Features hosted a festive bash Tuesday in stark contrast with the disturbing subject of first-time writer-director Joshua Marston‘s “Maria Full of Grace,” about a Colombian girl who rents out her insides to carry drugs to New York.
“Economic desperation is not in itself enough to explain why someone would end up choosing to become a mule,” said Marston. “In order to make Maria believable, it had to be her wanting something more in life, to break out of her environment and find her place in the world.”
Producer Paul Mezey, who was unsure what type of backing the Spanish-lingo pic would get, called it a “big surprise when HBO wanted to jump in and do this film the way we wanted to do it.”
