HOLLYWOOD — Warner Independent’s “Criminal” bow brought out an arresting crowd to the ArcLight and the Velvet Margarita Monday night.
Brad Pitt, Benicio Del Toro and Catherine Keener were among those toasting the caper pic that stars Diego Luna, Maggie Gyllenhaal and John C. Reilly, who noted, “Acting is like con work in a way.”
While “Criminal” is all about cheats and counterfeit cash, helmer-writer Gregory Jacobs put some honest hard work into creating his script. He said he and producer/co-scribe Steven Soderbergh “checked into a hotel for a week and wrote for 18 hours a day” to produce a first draft.
Standing among the revelers drinking tequila and munching on hors d’oeuvres, Jacobs said he finally thought he’d received his just desserts. “I worked as an assistant director for a really long time, for like 12 years, wanting to get this break,” he said.
