Roberto Garcia Barros, the former international sales manager of Argentinean net Telefe, died of heart failure in Buenos Aires August 29. He was 67.
Barros was among the leading execs who spearheaded Telefe’s sales division in the 1990s. Among his biggest achievements was the format sales of Telefe’s children’s musical show “Chiquititas” to Brazil’s SBT and comedy/family series “El Legado” to Italy’s RAI.
Barros began his career in the industry at the then leading ad agency, Publicidad TAN where he worked with childhood friend Pedro Leda, who was heading the film, radio and TV department.
“I called him ‘the Locomotive Engine’ for his untiring and overwhelming capacity for work,” said Leda. After going separate ways, the two friends reunited once more when Leda formed what is now the leading TV distribs of Latin America, Ledafilms.
In his 10 years at Ledafilms, Barros helped grow the company’s home video and international TV sales divisions. In 1995, Telefe pirated Barros to head the net’s newly formed international sales unit. He retired in 2002.
