Men's cabler greenlights skein's second season

A warning to aspiring reality TV stars: “The Joe Schmo Show” is coming back.

Men’s cabler Spike TV has greenlit a second season of “Joe Schmo,” ordering 10 hours of the series whose first edition consisted of an elaborate prank played on a would-be reality TV contestant.

In the first season of the reality spoof created by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese and produced by Stone Stanley Entertainment, ordinary guy Matt Kennedy Gould thought he was participating in a “Survivor”/”Big Brother”-style reality show. But he was actually surrounded by actors.

Insiders say season two parodies a different genre of reality TV.

“The show was a big success for us. So we’ve given Stone Stanley the greenlight to see if they could develop a way to pull it off again,” a Spike spokesman said.

First-season finale drew a record-breaking 3.4 million total viewers for Spike. While the first season’s September premiere drew modest ratings, auds built, with the final seg delivering a stellar 340% more men 18-49 than the first episode and 580% more men 18-34.

After having been fooled in front of millions, Gould inked a development deal with Spike last year (Daily Variety, Nov. 7). So far, he’s added commentary to repeats of the show, letting viewers in on his state of mind as he competed in the fake reality show. He also participated in an hourlong special hosted by Aisha Tyler on a guy’s guide to holiday gift buying.
