Mexican exhib inks with Imax

Popular chain switch to large-screen form

MIAMI — Imax has inked with Mexico’s Organizacion Ramirez, the country’s largest exhib, to install the large-screen format in three of the chain’s Cinepolis multiplexes.

The first will reuse existing space in the Cinepolis Perisur in Mexico City, the highest-grossing multiplex in the country. The screen is expected to open in time for the November release of Warner Bros.’ “The Polar Express: An Imax 3D Experience.”

The other two screens will be additions to existing cineplexes, and the locations are yet to be determined. Ramirez operates Cinepolis theaters throughout Mexico.

Cinepolis also is expanding into Central America. It has cinemas in Costa Rica and Guatemala, with additional screens to open in Panama.

Imax has eight theaters in Mexico.
