Group opens new 4,000 seat complex in Granada
BRUSSELS — Belgian cinema group Kinepolis has been looking to sunnier climes as it seeks to expand. Its third complex in Spain, housing 15 individual theaters and seating over 4,000, opened Saturday. The Kinepolis Granada complex is part of a continuing confidence in the Spanish market. While the average Belgian goes to the movies just over twice a year, people in Spain go three times. Kinepolis is hoping to see especially big auds given that Granada is a university town (one out of four inhabitants is a student). Kinepolis Madrid was the world’s largest cinema complex when it opened in 1998, with 25 theaters and over 9,000 seats. It attracted some 3.1 million cinemagoers last year, while Kinepolis Valencia packed in 2.1 million.
