Bailey, Afflect, Tanz to exec produce skein
Spike TV and LivePlanet are taking care of business.Cabler has greenlit “American Start-Up,” ordering 10 episodes of the reality series that mixes elements of “The Apprentice” and “American Idol.” Sean Bailey, Ben Affleck and Larry Tanz will exec produce the skein, announced Friday by Spike execs during the net’s sesh at the summer TV Critics Assn. press tour. In “Start-Up,” eight small businesspeople are given $50,000 in seed capital to launch their big idea. They’ll all compete in a series of tests and have to hit certain milestones needed to form a successful company. Week by week, one team will be eliminated by a board of professionals who will judge the performance of each entrepreneur. “Whoever wins gets a big infusion of cash,” Bailey said. “We believe it’s the American dream to own your own business.” What’s more, when the show is done, viewers will have a chance to support the winner by buying his product or visiting his store. Bailey said he, Matt Damon and Affleck, based the idea for the show on their own experiences starting LivePlanet. “Start-Up” is set for a 2005 premiere. (Josef Adalian contributed to this report).
