Giant adds more heft to vet's duties

MADRID — Taking up one of the most important positions in the Spanish TV business, Fernando Bovaira has been appointed director of content at film and TV giant Sogecable.

He will be responsible for programming, production and channel development at Sogecable’s merged digital TV platform Digital Plus, including its popular premium sports/movie service Canal Plus Espana. He replaces Jose Manuel Lorenzo, who ankled earlier this month.

Bovaira will continue as director of film production and distribution at Sogecable, which made him general manager and topper of production house Sogecine and its sister distribution company, Sogepaq.

Even if he were to ankle that post, he would oversee the production of helmer Alejandro Amenabar’s highly anticipated pic “Out to Sea.”

Sogecable is Spain’s only major source of pay TV coin for the local pic industry.

Bovaira’s promotion, announced Tuesday evening, was applauded by producers, who believe he will bring to Digital Plus the same combination of market know-how and quality filmmaking ability that has converted Sogecine into one of the most successful film production companies in Spanish history.

At Sogecine, Bovaira was the driving force behind Amenabar’s “The Others.”

“The Others” grossed $96.5 million at the U.S. box office and $34.1 million in Spain, making it the biggest Spanish B.O. earner ever.
