Net plans to air segs in spring, fall
ABC’s heading back into the “Life of Luxury,” ordering four more editions of the Robin Leach-fronted special.
The initial edition of “Luxury,” from Andy Friendly Prods., was golden for ABC in December. Special pulled the net’s best ratings in seven months in the Monday 8 p.m. slot.
“The strong performance confirmed that viewers love to get the insider’s view on how the other half lives,” said Andrea Wong, senior VP of alternative series and specials at ABC.
Net plans to air two more “Life of Luxury” segs this spring, with the other two set for fall.
Exec producer Andy Friendly said he’s conducting a search to find a contemporary co-host to serve alongside Leach. The production is also scouting for new rich and famous subjects to chronicle; December’s special featured Donald Trump, Richard Branson and Kimora Lee Simmons.
“It’s a tall order to do four more of these, a lot of work goes into them,” Friendly said. “It seems like a fairly simple show to do, but it’s fairly complicated. Booking is the toughest part.”
Friendly, the former King World programming president who recently got back into the production arena, serves as exec producer; Krusia Plonka is co-exec producer.
“I didn’t expect to be back producing,” said Friendly, who has most recently served as a consultant to several media companies. “But it’s fun to do something well enough to have it picked up for four more.”
