Come Tony time, the nominating committee may not have to look any further than “Assassins” to come up with five nominees for featured actor in a musical. Top of that list could be Mario Cantone, who ironically does not get a solo song in the Stephen Sondheim tuner.
“I busted Sondheim’s ass over that!” the actor said Thursday night post-Broadway opening. “I told him, ‘Don’t you have a trunk song you can give me?’ ”
Big question of the night: Will the “Assassins” guys want their tuner, first presented Off Broadway in 1991, to be considered a revival or new musical?
“That’s not a question to be answered tonight,” book writer John Weidman said. “Which doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking about it.”
