COLOGNE — Nordmedia, the arts funding body of Lower Saxony, is facing budget shortages that will hit film festival coin.
Lower Saxony’s federal government has cut Nordmedia’s annual support by 35%, E1 million ($1.3 million). It will be short an additional $260,000 as pubcasters ZDF and NDR have reduced their commitments and regional aid from the European Union has expired.
“We cushioned this by closing some departments and reducing our activities to the core business of production funding,” Nordmedia manager Jochen Coldewey said. First casualties will be film fests in cities that have more than two a year.
Film production support will not be affected by the cuts. “We will still have $13 million for production funding, mostly from TV fees, which cannot be used to support film festivals,” he said.
Nordmedia earmarked $4.2 million for 45 projects at its last funding session.
