Ratings were in ‘Jeopardy’ amid sweeps

Gameshow champ's loss a major hit for net

NEW YORK — Ken Jennings’ Nov. 30 loss on “Jeopardy” earned an 11.6 national rating — tops among all of the long-running champ’s 75 episodes. Jennings’ final victory the previous day, Nov. 29, earned a 9.6, and the show drew a 9.0 on Dec. 1 without him.

Starting on June 2, Jennings won 74 straight games on the way to an all-time gameshow record take of $2.52 million.

Jennings’ loss occurred on the second-to-last day of the November sweeps period, propelling “Jeopardy” to an 8.2 for the month, up from 7.8 in October.

As expected, syndie national ratings shot up during the November sweeps period as skeins brought out big-name guests and were heavily promoted. Hard to compare

Comparisons with November 2003 sweeps would be misleading because of the addition of local People Meters since last year and the fact that this year’s period included Thanksgiving while last year’s did not.

“The Insider,” the top firstrun rookie skein, earned a 2.8, jumping ahead of “Access Hollywood” (2.6) and into third place among newsmags. In October, the two shows tied for No. 3 with a 2.5.

Other sweeps figures for firstrun frosh: “Jane Pauley” (1.5), “Tony Danza” (1.4), “Ambush Makeover” (1.1), “Larry Elder” (0.9), “Pat Croce” (0.7) and “Life & Style” (0.5).

“Malcolm in the Middle” (3.3) led off-net rookies, followed by “Fear Factor” (2.0), “Yes, Dear” (1.8) and “Girlfriends” (1.6).
