Mouse fires up its debut

Revelers mingle with LAFD

HOLLYWOOD — You can’t fight fire with fire, but you sure can use it as a party theme.

At Monday’s “Ladder 49” bow, fire engines closed off Hollywood Boulevard and uniformed firemen (and a real Dalmatian!) greeted El Cap preemgoers. Post unspooling, revelers were shuttled over to the Los Angeles Fire Museum, where members of the LAFD joined in the mingling.

Thesp Robert Patrick called the Disney pic a dream come true for many of his castmates. “If you talk to pretty much any male around here, he’ll say, ‘when I was a little boy, I played firefighter,’ ” he said.

Thesps lived in Baltimore firehouses and went out on runs in preparation for their roles.

With all that training, are John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix now capable of fighting fires? “Probably better than most,” Travolta said. “I have some knowledge on the subject, yeah.”
