Lopez inks Showtime deal

'Crying' will premiere on cabler May 29

Showtime has signed George Lopez to perform as part of its series of standup comedy specials.

The one-hour spec “George Lopez: Why Are You Crying?” will premiere on the channel May 29.

Showtime decided to re-establish its standup biz last year, signing Dave Chappelle to headline a show for this summer (Daily Variety, Oct. 27). Christopher Titus will also host an hour later this year.

In “Why Are You Crying,” Lopez recounts life growing up Mexican in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Show, taped in February at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach, reps Lopez’s first televised solo spec. Encore airings are scheduled for May 30-31.

ABC recently picked up a third season of the comedian-thesp’s laffer “The George Lopez Show.” His debut book “Why Are You Crying? My Long Hard Look at Life, Love and Laughter,” published by Simon and Schuster, hits shelves the same day as the Showtime spec.

“Why Are You Crying” is produced by RickMill Production. Lopez, Ron DeBlasio, Kimber Rickabaugh and Paul Miller are exec producers.
