'Malkovich' scribe talks candidly about pic biz

On Saturday night, the Film Society of Lincoln Center welcomed “metaphysical prankster” Charlie Kaufman. In a one-on-one conversation with the org’s Kent Jones, scribe’s stories revealed as much about the biz as it did about himself. Regarding “Being John Malkovich,” Kaufman recalled, “I was told no one would make this movie. I was called into meetings so people could me tell me that, which seemed weird, but I accepted it.” Night’s one verboten topic seemed to be “Human Nature.” When an audience member raised the topic, Kaufman said, “The box office wasn’t high enough, so people don’t like to bring it up because they think I’ll be mad.”
