Haynes claims 'Poppins' preference at Outfest

HOLLYWOOD — The 22nd edition of Outfest kicked off with Christine Vachon presenting the event’s achievement award to director Todd Haynes Thursday at downtown’s Orpheum theater.

Haynes recalled that his love affair with film began with “Mary Poppins,” after which he re-created the scenes and played every character. “I dressed my mom as Mary Poppins, and I’ve played the part ever since.”

Angela Robinson‘s Sundance pic “D.E.B.S.” unspooled at the opener; afterward, the helmer called the reaction “totally gratifying.”

Among those getting a kick out of the party behind the theater were pic’s Holland Taylor and Devon Aoki;Outfest co-prexys Stephen Macias and Samantha Sprecher; execs Stephen Gutwillig and Kirsten Schaffer; plus guests Nina Jacobson, Meyer Gottlieb, Sandy Stern and Julie Bowen.
