Filmmaker joys in the ‘hood

Film fest finishes with Burnett tribute

The Hollywood Black Film Festival concluded Sunday with an awards ceremony and tribute to filmmaker Charles Burnett.

“Barbershop’s” Tim Story also was feted at the Harmony Gold Theater ceremony. After-party was at the Hollywood Athletic Club.

The fest kicked off Tuesday night with a screening of “Gas” followed by a bash. Helmer Henry Chan felt the fest was the ideal place for his film to preem.

“This film is local,” he said. “It’s produced right here, in the ‘hood. For us to be in this festival is the logical conclusion of the journey.”

Thesp Nabuschea Wright also expressed affection for the fest’s local flavor. “It’s homefelt,” she said. “I think anyone can come here and get discovered.”
