‘Fiddler’ drags Fierstein from ‘Cage’

Thesp replacing Molina as Tevye

NEW YORK — There was no denying the terp talent of the chorus boys of “La Cage aux Folles” opening night. “Most of them can do splits on both sides,” choreographer Jerry Mitchell said Thursday night at the Marquis Hotel after-party.

Although Gary Beach plays drag artist Albin in the current revival, book writer Harvey Fierstein would seem ideal casting. Instead, he replaces Alfred Molina in “Fiddler on the Roof” next month.

Fierstein explains how his “Hairspray” director made him accept the Tevye role: “Jack O’Brien told me if I didn’t do it that years from now I’d be telling the story how I turned down ‘Fiddler,’ and people would go, ‘Right. Sure.’ “
