JOHANNESBURG — Multichoice’s digital satcaster DStv is adding two Tamil-lingo channels aimed at ex-pat Indians in South Africa.
General entertainment channel Sun TV and 24-hour movie channel KTV began broadcasting July 22.
NDTV 24X7, a 24-hour English-lingo news channel available to subscribers of the Hindi-language bouquet, will now also be available to Tamil subs.
In India, the Tamil-speaking market is smaller than the Hindi-speaking market, but it’s an important growth area for DStv since 550,000 of South Africa’s 1.2-million people of Indian origin speak Tamil.
Vimla Frank, who manages specialty bouquets for Multichoice Africa, says the new Indian offering will be marketed under the banner of DStv Indian and will comprise a north Indian and south Indian bouquet.
Tamil-speakers have been petitioning DStv to include Tamil channels for some time.
