The question of the day at Sunday afternoon’s world preem of “Grand Champion,” held at the Crest Theater in Westwood: Would the very pregnant Julia Roberts make an appearance?
The answer turned out to be no, although her husband, “Champion” lenser Danny Moder, did walk the red carpet, as did her 13-year-old niece, Emma Roberts, who stars in the family-friendly oater.
Scribe-helmer Barry Tubb described the pic, about a Texan boy trying to rescue his prize steer, as “Free Willy on land,” or “Huck Finn on hooves.”
“W.C. Fields said, ‘Don’t work with kids or animals,’ ” Tubb said. “I can add that he’s wrong. Don’t work with cowboys.”
The West Texas native brought his spurs along for the post-screening petting zoo in a parking lot behind the theater, where moviegoers were able to ride horses, pet goats and geese and take a tumble in the bounce house.
