BMI sings praises

Wilson, Fountains perform; Mothersbaugh feted

Performing rights org BMI trotted out its annual cavalcade of top-moneymaking songwriters, composers and publishers in the pop and film/TV realms during two consecutive nights at the Regent BevWilshire.

His voice in fine form, Brian Wilson — the Lennon and McCartney behind the Beach Boys’ classic California sound — was particularly ebullient behind the keyboards during Tuesday night, when he performed spirited renditions of “Sloop John B” and “Help Me Rhonda.” Equally inspiring were reformed trio Wilson Phillip‘s angelic version of Wilson’s “In My Room,” and Fountains of Wayne‘s amped-up “Be True to Your School,” replete with the chorus “rah rah rah sis boom bah.”

Devo tunesmith-turned-film composer Mark Mothersbaugh‘s praises were sung Wednesday night.
