ASCAP event hit high notes

Org honors its tunesmiths

The songsters turned out in force at the BevHilton Tuesday for ASCAP’s annual Pop Music Awards, where rappers mingled with garage rockers and rock royalty by the pool before heading inside.

Founders Award recipient Jackson Browne performed a nostalgic three-song set, telling the aud he was glad that he ignored a friend who told him early in his career: “You can play guitar pretty good but you really shouldn’t try to sing.”

Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell presented the Creative Voice award to headbangers Metallica. Other attendees included Jewel, MTV’s Brian Graden and Richie Sambora.
