Ganeless goes for laughs in Gotham
Comedy Central has recruited yet another exec from USA Network.
Cabler has tapped former USA exec VP-general manager Michele Ganeless to serve in the same capacity at the laffer net. She fills the post vacated by Bill Hilary, who left in June.
Ganeless is the third executive hailing from USA to nab a top spot at Comedy Central: Topper Doug Herzog arrived in May and two months later snagged former USA senior VP Elizabeth Porter to run talent and events (Daily Variety, July 20).
Ganeless will report directly to Herzog. Senior VP-head of development Lauren Corrao will continue to report to Herzog.
Exec said she will oversee the Gotham operation and create new applications for content.
“I see my job as helping (Herzog) take care of the day-to-day business and letting him focus on the creative side,” Ganeless said. “The real challenge for me will be to find those new opportunities for our content in areas like digital and VOD.”
She also will be responsible for Comedy Central’s marketing, scheduling, acquisitions, research and promotions.
Like Herzog, Ganeless is a Comedy Central alum. In her first gig at Comedy Central (then known as Ha! Network), she was a research manager from 1990-92. After a brief stint at MTV as a VP of research and planning, she rejoined the laffer net in 1996 as a VP and rose to senior veep of programming.
Ganeless spent the last three years as Herzog’s No. 2 at USA, where she was exec veep-general manager. She was part of the team that launched basic cable’s top-ranked originals, “Monk” and “The Dead Zone.” During her years there, she oversaw acquisitions, scheduling, marketing, promotions and research.
In her most recent stint at Comedy Central, Ganeless helped to establish the cabler’s presence as a buyer of theatricals.
