A Dern good gala

Thesp fetes indie helmer Payne

Laura Dern had no notes for her presentation speech Wednesday at the seventh annual Filmmakers Alliance Gala. But when corrected from the audience by Vision Award honoree Alexander Payne, she responded, “Hold on, you’re not directing me right now!”

Event featured screenings of eight pics by independent filmmakers. Payne’s own acceptance speech stressed independent thought. “Like they tell you in therapy, it’s not them, it’s you … How can we, all of us, avoid the Hollywood crack pipe?”

Post-screening, revelers munched on sushi and tamales in the Directors Guild lobby. Seven-year-old Adair Tishler, who played Carrie in “Six and the City,” which unspooled at the event, noted that just as on the movie set, free food made things more fun.
